Our homeschool group recently held a Mojave Max class, and we attended. Mojave Max is a desert tortise, and so in this class, we learned about desert tortises.
Part of the learning process is dressing up a classmate as a turtle!
and of course, acting like one..
Some of the fun facts we learned: Desert tortises can drink from 3 places on their body: their mouth, their nose, and their bottom (yeah, I really did just say their butt).
To tell a female from a male, you have to feel their underside, Females are flat, males are bumpy.
A tortise holds their water for about a year because the desert is so dry. If you come upon one, they may get scared and pee, and so then it has to find a water source ASAP.
Baby tortises' shell is not a hard one untill they are about 5 years old, therefore, 1 in about 20 survive to adulthood.
This is a real shell, Felicity is looking inside for the spine. The kids had a great time, and learned a lot.
